In this study of 65 patients, 13 were evaluated five years after RF therapy. Only 14% of the 65 patients needed further treatment for BPH symptoms and went on to have transurethral resection of the prostate surgical procedure (TURP).

In this study of 188 patients, 121 were evaluated five years after RF therapy. More than 75% did not need additional treatment for BPH symptoms.

Medtronic PROSTIVA® RF Therapy for Symptomatic BPH

Medtronic PROSTIVA RF Therapy is a safe, in-office procedure with few side effects. The therapy uses low-level radio frequency (RF) energy to destroy excess prostate tissue.

PROSTIVA RF Therapy has been shown in clinical studies to improve urine flow and relieve urinary symptoms for five years in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).1,2

This therapy is indicated for the treatment of symptoms due to urinary outflow obstruction secondary to BPH in men over the age of 50 with prostate sizes between 20 and 50 cm3.

PROSTIVA RF Therapy is an in-office procedure that is usually done with local anesthesia only.  The procedure generally takes less than one hour, with some additional preparation and recovery time required.

During the procedure, RF energy is delivered via two electrodes into the prostate tissue for selective ablation of specific areas.  This produces a localized coagulated necrotic lesion, which may result in BPH symptom relief and improved urine flow.

RF therapy is associated with few side effects and adverse events.
