The University of Washington in Seattle currently has one research position available starting in May/June 2010. I am currently finishing my year here and could not have been more pleased with my choice. The position involves both basic and translational research. There is very limited patient contact and patient care responsibilities. You would be working closely with Drs. Lange and Vessella, two of the larger names in urology and urologic research. There are also opportunities to collaborate with other well established urologic researchers. The lab focuses on prostate cancer bone metastasis and there are more than enough projects underway to afford for ample publication material. You would also be a member of a rapid autopsy team for the procurement of prostate cancer tissue specimens from patients recently deceased from prostate cancer. This is one of only two rapid autopsy programs that I am aware of and the University of Washington is internationally recognized for this program. The stipend for the position is comparable to your level of post-graduate training that you would find with a categorical residency position. It is available to new graduates and those already in their post-graduate training seeking to strengthen their CV in hopes of ascertaining a urology residency and gain an invaluable experience in urologic research. The University of Washington is truly geared towards the development of the surgeon-scientist. I was extremely "green" to the research realm and the faculty was very supportive in my development. You will attend weekly lectures on prostate cancer at both the UW as well as the nationally recognized Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. You also have the opportunity to attend all resident conferences. I expect several publications out of this year alone. If you are interested, please contact me a mketch@washington.edu  or Dr. Vessella at Vessella@u.washington.edu. This has been a truly rewarding educational and enjoyable experience.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
