Good morning urologymatch.com! I apologize for my month-long blog hiatus, but I experienced a major life event toward the end of the interview trail (hint: “I’m going to the chapel and I’m...”) This “event” has pretty consummed all of my time, leaving me preciously spare moments to blog about my last few weeks on the trail. It has also enlightened me on how criminally expensive diamonds, cakes, dresses, seammtresses, DJs, open bars, and flowers are these days, but I digress…It’s 1:30am the night before (day of) match! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! If all goes well (God-willing), I’ll know where I’m spending the next five to six years of my life in less than 12 hours. It’s impossible to describe the combination of emotions I’m feeling right now. Definitely some fear, definitely some doubt, but also a ton of excitement. For the past few hours, I’ve been watching Sportscenter highlights over and over again, alternating between spoonfuls of Blue Bell Ice Cream and swigs of the best beer I could find at the grocery store on a late Sunday night. I figured my man essentials--sports, ice cream, and beer--would help distract me from the heart-thumping anticipation for 9:00 am tomorrow morning, the moment when I’ll refresh my email inbox and receive that fateful message from the AUA.I’ve been thinking for several weeks now how I’m going to (hopefully) celebrate this special moment. Fortunately, as I was listening to the radio driving home from the grocery store, the greatest philoshoper-musician of our time, Ke$ha, provided me with a timely script for tomorrow morning in her hit song, Tik Tok: “Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy / Grab my glasses, I'm out the door, I'm gonna hit this city / Before I leave, brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack / 'Cause when I leave for the night, I ain't coming back” (Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iP6XpLQM2Cs&ob=av2n)Who doesn’t want to wake up in the morning feeling like a man who made millions of dollars with little talent and who successfully changed his name from Sean to Puff to P? Now, I’ve never brushed my teeth with Jack Daniels, but if there ever was a day to do it, it’s Match Day. And, if all goes well, I’ll be celebrating the night away with close friends (including Mr. Jack Daniels). Thanks Ke$ha!Of course, my real plan looks a little different. I’ll be sharing this special moment with my significant other in a library room where my first med school study group met to memorize the branches of the brachial plexus (yes, I’m weirdly sentimental about crap like that). After we find out, several of my best friends are joining us with a bottle of champagne to (hopefully) celebrate with rounds and rounds of toasts to all of the people who helped make this moment possible for me: family, friends, deans, professors, and all of the mentors and teachers from my past who encouraged and inspired me to become a doctor.Best of luck to all the applicants out there sharing this nervous night with me. It was truly a pleasure meeting so many of you on trail, and I look forward to calling all of you my colleagues in the near future.
