Spoke to one PD today at an unnamed mid tier program.  Said they received 10-20% more apps this yr than last year.  This could mean that things are more competitive this year or could just reflect the fact that applying students have applied more broadly this yr (90 instead of 20 apps) out of increased fear of not matching due to last yrs stats.  Who knows? thoughts?
i spoke to a PD at a low-tier program who said they had 180 apps this year, up from 120 last year, for only two spots

Did they mention if the number of interviews will be the same? So if one were to get an interview, would their chances be the same as matching in previous years?

This likely means that there will be a lot of trickle down cancellations as it is very hard to schedule more than 15 interviews without conflicts. And at this point most top dogs are getting more interviews than they can handle. I imagine that the total pool of applicants is similar in size this year just more apps.
