During my search for away rotations just came across a press release that Dr. Blute moved from Mayo Clinic to UMASS to direct their Cancer Center of Excellence. Any comments about his move? Would that affect anything at Mayo?

While a particular chairman is important, programs like Mayo Clinic will not be affected that much. They rely on their name to attract patients and physicians. Most likely, Mayo will find a suitable replacement for Blute rather quickly and residency training and pursuit of a career will not be affected.
Dr blute is a giant in the field and a great guy. This does affect them as it will be difficult to get a big name to come to the middle of nowhere in minnesota. They have other talented faculty to pick internally and they have set up their datasets to publish big papers for years to come. But- Blute was a big part of making that place special.
I just talked to one of my friends that matched there...they had a new oncologic surgeon start last summer and another one has been hired and starting in May.
Dr. Husmann is the current Chairman of the department at Mayo anyway.
Blute is a huge loss to Mayo Clinic. He does more oncology surgery there than anyone. Anyone who thinks this is not a big deal is absolutely clueless. This is the equivalent of Gill leaving CCF. CCF and Mayo are great programs but losing an attending of that caliber changes a lot.
No one even liked Gill at CCF and he didn't let the residents ever operate so although it was a big loss for the department, I don't think it was a very big loss for the residency program.
