I've never been to one, but here is what I was planning on wearing (just a guess). (male)Nice jeans, button-down shirt, +/- casual blazer And if I'm really feeling stylish, I might rock the classic blazer over T-shirt look.
PGY1 here. I rocked jeans and polo to any dinner at a restaurant or bbq type event (ie vast majority of the time), or slacks and button-down (but no tie) if at an attendings house or if it was a catered event on campus (twice).
From what I've heard, no jeans. Play it safe and go business casual, no tie necessary.
I think it depends on the venue. I'm not showing up at a bar to drink beer with residents in khakis of any sort - I'll stick with my jeans and blazer, thank you. If the venue is a hotel or nice restaurant, that's a different story and something dressier might be in order. I'd consider looking up what kind of place it is first. To each his own, but I will be wearing jeans at some of them.
I agree, I think jeans are ok at some places. For instance I have a few dinners at a resident's house which jeans will be fine for. And if the invitation says casual dress I think jeans are also fine

never hurts to ask the admin who has put together loads of these things at his/her program over the years
As a current resident, I would not wear jeans. Just dress business casual, unless then dinner/meeting is at a dive bar/pool hall...
