Applying to both matches

Is it feasible to apply for both matches as an extra security? If I don't match in urology. I rather start a gen surg categorical than lose a year and reapply.

yes. possible

yes. possible.  in theory this is the purpose of early match.people rarely do this. requires lots of planning (and$)probably a good idea to keep this on the down-low, since some believe that such hedging of bets shows inconsistent commitment to urology (that's b.s.)

Gen Surg Backup?

I had the exact same question at this time last year, and my school's Dean of Student Affairs actually advised me to apply for Categorical Gen Surg as a backup. I briefly considered doing this, but decided instead to apply for and interview at as many urology programs as humanly possible. My thinking was that I could schedule more urology interviews if I'm not going to Gen Surg interviews too (in other words, I decided that skipping potential urology interviews to attend Gen Surg interviews would have been counterproductive). I thought this way I'd maximize my number of urology interviews (and therefore my chances of matching Urology). Fortunately, the strategy worked :-)If you're all about urology and have no particular geographic limitations or preferences, or any other limiting factors, I'd suggest you similarly go for it full-force, cast a wide net of applications, and go to as many urology interviews as possible. The more Willy Wonka bars you open, the greater your chances of getting the Golden Ticket.Best of luck!MerritStony Brook University Medical Center, Urology '16

I knew without a doubt I

I knew without a doubt I wanted Urology and also knew I might not be the strongest candidate based on scores for me. So, I looked into research fellowship opportunities early on and actually went to see a few places about them "just in case". And I actually did end up applying to a few last minute prelim/cat surg programs literally just before the deadlines on Eras (mid-December). I did not go to any interviews for them, until starting in Jan which was for me past all my urology interviews. I went to 2 prelim surg program interviews and actually really liked one of them in Alabama. However, prior to my match list submission for the NRMP (regular match) I decided I would do a urology research yr if I didnt match instead of a surg yr because I was dead set on Urology and felt the research would strengthen my application more than a clinical yr,  and God forbid I change my mind, I would just scramble into one of the many unfilled Prelim Surg spots somewhere. Thank God, I got Urology. But thats how I went about it.Best to you!

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I do have some limitations and that's why I am thinking of a backup. The idea of not matching is already giving me nightmares!
