has anyone heard of students emailing the program director/coordinators expressing interest in their programs for those places you haven't heard a thing from yet and asking about open interview spots?
I have emailed quite a few of the program coordinators asking about more waves of interviews/more spots, etc. Haven't heard back from quite a few. I, too, have wondered about emailing the PD, but am not sure what the proper etiquette is on that. It's probably still a little early in the process...not sure
This something I have been struggling with as well. I feel like I want to contact some of the programs I really want to interview at and express to them that I didn't just shotgun apply there but really want to go there. I am just unsure of what to say and when to send. Anyone have any insight into what is proper.
I'm not sure what to say, except that as long as you do it in a respectful, dignified way it can only help you. Presumably you'd be contacting a program that has already sent out their main wave of invites and you've already been left in the dust, right? So what's the worst that can happen? You don't get an interview, which it seems like you weren't getting anyway. I doubt there are many situations where you were going to be contacted, and then as a result of your expression of interest, the program changed their mind about you for the worse...like "Oh, who does this guy think he is telling me he really likes out program and wants to come here? I was going to give him an interview but now screw him!!!" That doesn't really make sense, unless you do something really off the wall. More likely, it can only help you. You already missed the program's main wave of interviews, so if you haven't been expressly rejected, assume you're on a wait list of sorts and let the program know what you think of them. Just don't tell a program that they're your first choice - it seems to be a turn off and they don't believe you, even if it is true.I'm just a fellow applicant, so take my opinion for what it is.
so, this is in response to a comment in the SUNY downstate thread... i figure this is the right place for the response.I caved in and took the time to e-mail a couple places that i was passed on the first round of interviews. of course places that i didnt "shotgun" apply to; instead places that i really thought I would fit in. I asked the PD at my school what the protocol is for this sort of thing and he said to reach out to the PR and coordinators. and so it went something like...I have found that your initial wave of interview offers has gone out and I am aware that I was not included on the list. Ordinarily, I would not be as demonstrative given the circumstances, but I believe that it is important that I express how seriously I am considering blah blah blah. I went on to talk about why i want to be there and what interests me in the program.I also asked if i could be re-considered for potential openings secondary to interview cancellations and what-not. As was said before, the key is to be tactful. You obviously dont want to seem spiteful. Just think of it as you are given the opportunity to put your best foot forward. Just be polite! hope this helps people who are still looking for those last openings! see ya'll on the trail.
Hey mt, did you send this to just the PD, or the PD and coordinator as well? Thanks!
