my guess is they are doing this a an atempt to look like they are activiley looking since for a state funded program they can appear to be playing favorites. My guess is they already have a guy lined up or at least down to two or three. Either way if you apply you can show up at the office and they assume you are there for for residency interviews you may correct them and state you are seeking to become the chair.
former resident-Dr Jean DeKernion is stepping down. no surprise- he is ~72 yrs old but still a great surgeon. he was waiting for the hospital to move across the street and get established since he is one of the important medical school deans. UCLA is a public institution and I believe they have to make a posting. There is a search committee and they are interviewing several internal candidates and several external candidates. I would not worry- UCLA is going to be fine regardless of who they choose. While many programs have excellent clinical experiences similar to ucla- there are few that match the academic calibre of surgeon-scientists. The leader may change, but if you want to have a good research experience and head to a good academic career- Ucla is a great place.
