The people I’ve met recently on the trail, most of them are at the point of exhaustion after having gone through umpteen interviews. Many are travelling from place to place without even the cushion of a day in between. In talking with them, what I’ve also realized that this is the time we peak in terms of performing at these interviews. We’ve been well trained. There’s rarely at this time a question we have not heard of. We’ve constructed this package, this image of ourselves, and an arsenal of stories that we can use to deflect any question that come our way. We can do this, most likely, with our eyes closed in our sleep because we’ve answered it up to 14 times, so I’ve heard, of the same question in one day. We are at the peak of our performance, we know what to say. Rarely would I encounter an applicant that will say they are nervous or unsure about what’s going to happen the next day. Powerful chairmen with intense stares can no longer faze us, nor would double-/triple-team of questionnaires. We’re good at this--we’re masters of the game. I’ve also learned a bit of efficiency through all this. Hotels, airlines, and car rentals feels surprisingly familiar and streamlining the whole trip is quite satisfying. I can also probably take off my shoes, belt, and jacket in one sweeping motion. Really. Having said that, this is also the time where I think I risk complacency. With a combination of the routine, the fatigue, and the repetitiveness, I find a lack in motivation at times to do the necessary research and to take that extra step to make sure I’m prepared. For many of us, this is the home stretch now and if I’ve learned anything in the past month, it’s that every little thing counts in this process. In other news, there seems to be a bug floating around on the trail, which generally consists of stuffy nose, sore throat and possible progression to bronchitis. Many have succumbed to it, including myself, and snot has never helped interviews. So keep the hand sanitizers close and safe travels!
