It depends what your goals are for the rotation.September is too late to get letters of recommendation from any of your away faculty in. Applications open Sept. 1 and you should probably have all of your materials in before you even start your Sept. rotation. However, if you're really interested in the program you're doing the away at and are using it as a month-long interview, it's not too early. If you work hard and impress some of the faculty it may help you move up on their list come rank time.In other words, an away in September can only help you at that particular program, and will do nothing in terms of getting you an interview elsewhere. Once on interviews, however, you will definitely get asked about your away experience.

what is said above is absolutely true for an october rotation. it is still possible to get letters in from a Sept rotation (a fourth letter) in time for interviews but I would not bank on it because that is a risky position to be in. the letter writer has to be very reliable and aware of the deadline. realistically, most letters take a while (upto 30-45 days) to trickle in after you submit and if you have 3 letters submitted already then you will start to get interviews. regardless, your application should be in before the rotation starts.
I got my 3rd letter during my one and only away rotation in September. You do NOT need all the letters in on Sept 1st, but do definitely submit it on that date.
I did an away rotation in October at a program that I was very interested in due to location. I was not expedcting a letter and was just using it as a "try out". You should have your 3-4 letters prior to this. You may even be interviewed while on the rotation. The only downside is that your interviews may start late october and you have to take time a day or two off, but most programs are understanding.
I'm a student at a program with no home program so i plan on doing 4 week aways July and August (Since I still 3rd year clerkships in June). Would it be advisable to do another away in Septemeber to get a 3rd letter if required. Is there any other way around this since I really want my application in and complete quick. Thank you!
