Pre-Interview Dinners/Mixers

Most of the places I will be interviewing at have a "casual" dinner with residents as an optional event. For those that have gone on interviews already, how was everyone dressed?  Does casual mean a button up and jeans or something like shirt tie and khakis?

As a male it never hurts to

As a male it never hurts to wear a nice pair of khakis and a clean button down. Females should wear something that is not too revealing above or below. Some places will explicitly state business casual due to faculty being present at an event. Shouldn't ever have to wear a suit to the pre event but don't show up wearing shorts or something with stains.

dress to impress

I interviewed several yrs ago, but i doubt much has changed. Look professional. Occasionally faculty will ask the residents if someone stood out. dont be the guy who stands out negatively.  Also I know occasionally folks may want to cut loose and drink a lot- just watch out. My year there was a guy who puked after the dinner....doubt he got in to that program

Went to my first yesterday.

Went to my first yesterday. Was mostly button downs and nice jeans or khakis. No ties or anything. Sort of "smart casual" vs business casual.

How bad is it if you dont go?

Maybe some the residents lurking on here can comment.   Is it going to hurt me if I can't make it to the resident outing for travel considerations?  One of the places that might be difficult to make it is a place I did an away.  I feel I know the residents and program pretty well already.  But that being said its also would be one of my top choices so I don't want to mess it up.

It happens

there were a few threads on studentdoctor.net about this issue. Most residents and attendings said programs are very understanding about it. They have been there and know that scheduling interviews can be difficult and you can't always make it. A minority did say that some programs expect interviewees to attend the night before and can be disappointed if they don't make it.I missed a pre-interview this weekend and nobody really said anything about it, though you'd never know if they secretly made note of it somewhere. And I wasn't the only one who missed it due to late flights, conflicts with other interviews, etc
