I'm considering applying to a surgery internship as a back-up if I don't match this time around, with the plan to re-apply next year. I'm wondering about the time frame of doing this. I'm not sure if I should wait until January or apply now. Do I need to get new LORs and write a new personal statement?
I would assume so... At least that you would need a rewritten personal statement. You might be able to ask your letter writers to slightly modify their previous letters. Make sure you apply to surgery programs at hospitals that have urology programs that you think you could get into. Another option would be to do a research year next year rather than an internship. Kind of a tough call. I know one guy who did a research year and he managed to get in.
