Trouble with 3rd Year Grades

Hi everyone. I'm pretty worried about matching into Urology given my current situation:-235 on Step 1-all Pass on my 3rd year clerkships (only 3 left)-I will be taking a year off to do Urology research and (most likely) getting published from it(If it matters, I go to a top 10 med school, that grades H/HP/P/F)I know having all Passes is obviously a disadvantage, but I was wondering if that plus my step 1 score should make me consider another speciality or if I still have a chance of matching in Urology? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Does that include surgery and medicine? My third year grades weren't stellar, either, with the same scale: H, H, HP, P, P, P, P, P. But the honors were in surgery and medicine.I matched at a very competitive program, but I also did an away rotation there. I think letters of reference and a good audition rotation are more important, but your step 1 doesn't jump off the page either. I'd take step 2 CK early.

Agree with above

I'd say you certainly haven't ruined your chances of matching in urology, but conversely you haven't done yourself a ton of favors either.  Try to honors your last 3 clerkships, and take step 2 early and do your best to destroy it. Other than that your best chance at matching will come from doing appropriate aways, research, and great letters.  By appropriate I mean look for places that you're interested in, but also have a track record of matching their away rotators, ~50% of matched applicants this year went to their home program or where they did an away. If you do take a year off for research try your hardest to get published.  I found attendings and PIs don't really care how many hours you spend in the lab or how much you read, but if you can get a first author paper published they'll write you amazing letters of rec. Best of luck.

Similar what are my chances question:- 250 on step 1- H in surg but P in med (rest HP with one other P in fam med)- 1st author non-uro papers but no uro publications/abstractsWas late in the game in choosing uro but hoping to catch up knowledge base before aways. Worried that uro has become super competitive so wondering what the best programs to shoot for are.

People asking these sorts of questions should indicated what sort of med school they go to.  Believe it or not, it plays a role.  Especially if it is a good med school with a good urology department. With reference to your scores, my app last year was pretty similar.   Yours in better in someways, in someways not.  Pretty even.  I matched fantastically. The fact that your seem to have 1st authored some things will definitely indicate an authentic interest in research.  It doesn't matter what kind of research as long as it is scientific and medical in nature.I decided on uro late so no worries.  Just apply for your aways and do your thing the best you can.  There is no knowledge base that you need to obsess over.  none of you really know anything about urology.  Your enthusiastic, yet (hopefully) humble ignorance is completely expected.I'll be honest....you have to hit the minimum requirements for all the numbers, grades, and have some demonstrated research interest.  beyond that, it is who likes you and who speaks up for you.  So be humble and try to do your best as much as possible.  you can never anticipate who will be the person that speaks up for you behind closed doors when all is said and done.   Oh yeah, don't be mean to anyone.  Literally a single, strongly felt negative word about you can torch your chances at a place.  The thing about negativity is that it doesn't have to come from a high place to hurt you.   Oh yeah, and urology departments talk to each oth
