Job Summary

The Department of Urology at the University of Michigan is looking for an ambitious, and dedicated individual for a sponsor funded post-doctoral position available immediately for a period of 12 months. The research project will employ quantitative approaches to study optimal holmium laser settings for dusting technique during ureteroscopic stone surgery. The aim of the project is to understand laser settings and fiber characteristics that provide the best fragmentation and dusting effects during holmium laser lithotripsy, that will help urologists better select patients for dusting or retrieval techniques.

The supervisors for this position are Dr. Khurshid Ghani and Dr. William Roberts, from the Division of Endourology. Dr. Roberts is an academic urologist specializing in endourology and minimally invasive surgery. He is an inventor of histotripsy, directs the Translational Histotripsy Laboratory at the University of Michigan, and has led the effort to translate histotripsy technology for urologic applications. Dr. Ghani is an authority in the Dusting technique for ureteroscopic stone surgery, and the Co-Director of the Michigan Urological Surgery Improvement Collaborative.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be guided to perform and record experiments using a state of the art high-watt holmium laser system, in a dedicated procedural laboratory equipped with a ceiling mounted three-axis positioning system for laser lithotripsy targeting and monitoring of response. The fellow will be involved in regular weekly research meetings, in addition to scientific and career mentoring, abstract and manuscript preparation. 

Required Qualifications

Candidates must be currently residing within the United States and must be within 1-4 years of completion of an accredited postgraduate program in a health science discipline (Masters, M.D., Ph.D.).

Desired Qualifications

It is advantageous if the selected candidate has experience with the use of in vivo and in vitro methodologies to conduct physiological studies. Good analytical and planning skills, attention to detail, excellent writing and verbal communication skills, excellence in scientific writing and public presentation, an ability to work well in a team, and a positive attitude are essential.
