John A. Fracchia Urology Research Scholar
The John A. Fracchia Urology Research Scholar position is an honor awarded annually to a medical student with aspirations to become an academic urologist. The scholarship provides salary funding to support the Scholar for a full time, one-year research position in the Smith Institute for Urology at the Northwell Health System. The Scholar is involved in both clinical and basic science research with the close mentorship of multiple faculty members across a dynamic 15 hospital health system. The research Scholar is involved in monthly research meetings and every aspect of the research process from the generation of new ideas, IRB submission, data collection/analysis, abstract submission, manuscript preparation, and presentation at local, national, and international meetings.
The position is in the name of John A. Fracchia who has been an outstanding advocate of urology graduate medical education in New York for 40 years. Dr. Fracchia has been the Urology Residency Program Director and Chairman of Urology at Lenox Hill Hospital since 1983 and has caringly shepherded the careers of dozens of aspiring urologists. The naming of the award in his honor is a reflection of his lifelong commitment to educating medical students and urology residents.
Past Urology Research Scholars at the Smith Institute have contributed greatly to the urologic literature, and have enjoyed tremendous success at matching into urology residencies at prestigious programs throughout the country. Scholars have been highly productive averaging 15 abstract submissions and 7 manuscript submissions for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Requirements:
1) Applicants must be currently enrolled, or graduates of, an ACGME accredited medical school looking to take 1 year for dedicated research
2) Submission of CV, medical school transcript, and USMLE scores (if taken).
